Mary Kay Glam – A First Look Into Mary Kay Makeup

A couple days ago, I received a lovely little box that was filled with fun Mary Kay products for the summer. I had an opportunity to review these products through Influenster and thought it would be an awesome chance for me to try out some products from a new brand and share my thoughts with you guys.

All the products came in really nice packaging with a cute pink box made from recycled material. I took a look through the catalog that they sent me and their prices seem mid-range. One thing that I found interesting is that their blushes and bronzers are sold so that you have to buy the refill product and the case separately. It definitely gets quite a bit more expensive if you want a case for your blush/bronzer.

Mary Kay Translucent Loose Powder $16 | Mary Kay Mineral Cheek Color in Shy Blush $12 | Mary Kay Bronzing Powder $18

Compacts/cases for the blush and bronzer are sold separately and cost $16 to $35 depending on the size.

The bronzer was really nice and soft. As soon as I saw it, I thought of NARS Laguna bronzer. The color is extremely similar with Mary Kay’s bronzer being a bit lighter and having more of a sheen. The Mary Kay bronzer also has more of a pink undertone while the NARS bronzer has more of a golden/orange undertone.

One of my favorite products that I tried out was Mary Kay’s blush in Shy Blush. I’m a huge fan of pinky peach blushes and I have quite a collection going on. I would have to say that Shy Blush is an exact dupe for NARS Orgasm. Both have a really pretty golden, peachy glow that looks amazing on.

Would I necessarily purchase this over Orgasm? I’m not so sure. While Mary Kay’s blush refill costs $12 by itself, once you add the case, the total comes to $28. It’s still a bit cheaper than Orgasm, which is $30, but for me, NARS products are a lot easier to get a hold of. That being said, I probably won’t need to purchase any more pinky peach blushes anytime soon :)

I’m a powder fanatic so this loose powder from Mary Kay was perfect for me. It has a really light texture and blurs out pores nicely. I think this will be great for traveling as it has a twist top part where you can close up the holes when it’s not being used. Finally, no mess in my makeup bag!

Mary Kay Gel Eyeliner with Expandable Brush Applicator in Jet Black $18 | Mary Kay Cream Eye Color in Apricot Twist $14

I know this is going to sound shocking, but I’ve never bought black eyeliner before. I have a liquid felt-tip liner that I got from a friend and a small sample of Makeup Forever’s Aqua Liner, but I’ve never personally purchased one before.

Why? Because I tend to prefer a softer brown liner. That being said, I actually really like the look of this black liner, especially when I have a bit of eyeshadow on. I have trouble using eyeliner since my eyes are really uneven, but I find gel eyeliner to be the easiest formula to work with. This eyeliner stayed on for a good amount of time but it wasn’t as waterproof as I expected. I think it would be better for someone with less watery eyes, but it was still a simple and easy eyeliner to work with that stayed looking nice for most of the day.

The Cream Eye Color in Apricot Twist was definitely my favorite product. It’s a really pretty shimmery apricot-champagne cream eyeshadow that’s very smooth and easy to use. It looks beautiful on by itself and also makes a really great base for any eyeshadow that you want to put on top of it.

I’ve really been into my Maybelline Color Tattoo in Bold Gold recently (which I also got from my friend), but it’s a bit too glittery and metallic for a super natural, everyday eye. This Cream Eye Color is barely noticeable and just seems to brighten and lift the eyes with a touch of shimmer. I think it’ll be perfect for an everyday makeup look.

Mary Kay Nourishine Plus Lip Gloss in Mango Tango $14 | Mary Kay Lash Love Mascara in I ♡ Black $15

I’m not a huge fan of lip glosses during the summer as they feel quite heavy and sticky on the lips. Mary Kay’s Lip Gloss in Mango Tango is, in my opinion, quite a sticky formula. It does last longer on my lips since it is stickier, but it can start to feel a bit annoying. While the color is a really fresh and pretty red-orange, I don’t think it’ll become one of my staples. I’ll have to test it out again and see.

Although I have really short eyelashes, I hate wearing mascara. Yes, my lashes look nonexistent, but that’s better than having heavy lashes. I tend to dislike pretty much every mascara I try (since I don’t really like mascara in the first place) and I disliked this one as well. I did actually enjoy the brush since it was really small and easy to use. However, the formula was really wet and didn’t dry very well either. It really didn’t do anything for my lashes and the super wet formula just felt too heavy.

Mary Kay Cream Eye Color/Concealer Brush $10 | Mary Kay Powder Brush $16

I really loved Mary Kay’s Cream Eye Color/Concealer Brush. I tried applying both my concealer and cream eyeshadow with it, and it works really well both ways. I do prefer applying cream shadows with my fingers, so I think I’ll stick to using concealer with this brush. It’s very soft and applies concealer on my under eyes and blemishes without streaking.

On the other hand, I didn’t like their Powder Brush. The hairs were rough and even after I washed them, they didn’t feel much better. Maybe with more washes, the hairs will become softer, but for now, I don’t really like this brush.

Overall, I was quite happy with Mary Kay’s products. I especially liked their blush, bronzer, and cream eyeshadow. There are definitely some things that I could live without, but for the most part, I think it’s a brand worth checking out. Have you guys tried any Mary Kay products before? Is there anything you would recommend?

I’ve been absolutely addicted to this song recently. Not only does Hozier have an amazing voice, but I really appreciate the thoughts and meanings he puts into his songs and music videos. I try not to bring too much politics into my blog, but I think gay rights is an important issue that Hozier brings up in a really compelling way through Take Me To Church. You can read an interesting interview from The Cut <here> if you want to know more about him. I thought he articulated himself perfectly when he said “To me, it’s not even a gay issue or a civil rights issue, it’s a human rights issue, and it should offend us all.”

Hozier – Take Me to Church

Take me to church

I’ll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies

I’ll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife

Offer me that deathless death

Good God let me give you my life

PS: Sorry about the less than optimal lighting. Ever since the trees in front of my dorm window started to bloom (? – what do you call it when a tree grows leaves again?), light hasn’t been reaching my room very well.

** I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes. I wasn’t paid to write this review and everything in this post is my own opinion. It’s important for me to share my honest reviews with you guys, whether good or bad, and I would never post anything that I don’t agree with. **
